Day two
The sweet smell of week-old garbage permeated the air as the team headed towards the massive pile.
They had traveled all night, a total of twenty-two hours in a van coming from Minnesota.
I had given them a couple hours to rest before getting down and dirty, but the majority of them would not sit still.
They had raised a carnival tent for the team of 1,000 that was to be invading the grounds within the next 48 hours.
What was their response?
Songs of Praise… literally!
I was moved as this exhausted team stepped down into the pit of servanthood.
And more than that, they did it with joy.
It is probably the nastiest work they had ever done, yet they sang and had smiles on their faces the whole time.
The songs would occasionally be interrupted by a chorus of “ooohhhhhhhhh” or “gross” in the distance as response to the slosh that had splattered all over an unknowing victim as they lunged a trash bag into the dumpster.
I have been blessed already with the opportunity to lead this team.
